James Benton III is a native of the city of Lake Charles and a graduate of Washington Marion High School. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from McNeese State University and later received his Juris Doctorate from Southern University Law Center in Baton Rouge.
Mr. Benton has been a distinguished member of the Army reserves for over 14 years. He was deployed in 2002-2003 for Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom as a part of the 336th Fincom. Upon his return he received several awards for his duty.
Mr. Benton’s military education includes a finance specialist certification from U.S. Army Finance School. He is currently a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Reserve Judge Advocate Group (J.A.G.) and a member of the 22nd Legal Support Organization (Trial Defense).
Mr. Benton is a member of the Louisiana Bar Association and a board member of the Advisory Council for Baton Rouge College. He is also a lifelong martial artist holding black belts in Tae Kwon Do and Blue Dragon Kung Fu; and has studied Aikido, Judo, Tai Chi Chuan, and Wing Chun.
